Paolo Serra was born in 1946 in Morciano di Romagna, on the hills near Rimini. His artistic education took place in England, where he moved when very young and held his successful first solo show when only sixteen. For years the artist has undertaken an original new form of research into light, space and form that brings him to create works characterised by pure line and fascinating colour. The techniques he uses to create depth in his work are the result of use of ancient materials, such as hundreds of very light layers of oriental lacquering, the precious shine of gold leaf, or Titianesque reds made from cochineal. He produces abstract works which conceal behind their apparent chromatic minimalism a dense grid of stratifications of colour, allowing the viewer to glimpse a more intimate and mysterious form of depiction. The criterion with which he arranges his geometric shapes on the surface is inspired by the Fibonacci series, in which each number is the sum of the two numbers before it.
The artist obliges the viewer to go beyond the immediate appearance of things and process the work mentally.
