Matteo Basilé (1974) lives and works in Rome. He began his career in the mid-nineties, becoming one of the first artists in Europe to combine art with technology. Basilé’s work is unique in its ability to reconcile apparently incompatible concepts such as the beautiful and the grotesque, the real and the surreal, the natural and the artificial, contaminating technology with Italy’s artistic tradition to construct surreal, dreamlike images. His work takes the form of an ongoing dialogue between east and west, between tradition and modernity, between the sacred and the profane, creating a new iconographic universe halfway between high-tech mannerism and a new surrealism in which reality and fiction overlap. Echoes of Caravaggio, the sumptuous scenes of the Roman Baroque, Flemish art and Velázquez’s deformed figures animate the artist’s photographs and videos, creations combining sculpture, architecture, painting and film. Exploring the nature of the human being, the artist develops a narrative that may be subdivided into successive chapters:

Quel che resta della Transavanguardia (2006) The Saints are Coming (2007), Thisoriented (2009), Thishumanity (2010), Landing (2012), Unseen (2014), Pietra Santa (2016), Viaggio al Centro della Terra (2017) Stardust (2018), Memento (2019), a series of independent stages in which the artist addresses his perception of existence. Matteo Basilé’s works are magically suspended between the time of art and the time of history, bringing back the enigmas that great painting has managed to convey over time and generations, and building upon it a new interpretation of Renaissance portraiture, now capable of insinuating a myriad of other meanings below the surface of the image: its power is no longer that of teaching or of capturing the spirit of the subject, but the power of fascination.
