Julia Fullerton-Batten, a German photographer born in 1970 who lives and works in London, is the prominent new addition that Marcorossi Artecontemporanea is showcasing in a solo exhibition at its galleries in Milan, Turin, and Verona in September 2024. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with curator Claudio Composti.

Julia Fullerton-Batten’s artistic projects are centered around specific themes, with each image enriched by a narrative story, crafted as true tableaux-vivants staged using cinematic lighting techniques. The project on display in the galleries is titled *Old Father Thames*, created by the artist between 2018 and 2024. It features around thirty stories that have taken place on the Thames over the centuries.

“The Thames,” the artist explains, “while not the longest river in the British Isles, holds immense significance for both British and global history. London would not have existed without the Thames, a source of freshwater and food, a transportation and communication artery, and also a physical and psychological boundary. For all these reasons, it is regarded as a true Father.” The Thames serves as the central figure in various stories through time, which the artist has meticulously recreated, from environments to costumes and scenarios, resulting in captivating images that blend elements of painting, photography, and cinema.

Julia’s use of unconventional locations, highly creative settings, and street models are hallmarks of her style. She infuses her images with visual tension and a mysticism that compels viewers to continually re-examine the scene, discovering something new with each encounter.

Her works are renowned and exhibited globally, earning her numerous awards. She is frequently featured in photography magazines, serves as a Hasselblad ambassador, and is a regular speaker at international workshops and a judge for international competitions. Her images grace the covers of *A Guide to Collecting Contemporary Photography*. Her works are part of the permanent collections of institutions such as the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, the Parliamentary Art Collection at the Houses of Parliament, and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
